Early Life & Education
3LAU, whose real name is Justin David Blau, was born on January 9, 1991, in the sleepy New York hamlet of Syosset. Because of his resourceful upbringing, he learned to play the piano, the guitar, and the voice at a young age and quickly fell in love with music.
3LAU moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, with his family when he was just 13 years old, where he spent the most of his formative years. Prior to pursuing his higher education at Washington University in St. Louis, he completed his high school education at The Meadows School.
Russell Mark Blau, 3LAU’s father, is a wealthy attorney, and his mother, Linda May Wallace, owns and operates a thriving business. His third great-grandfather, Naftaly Blau, is from his father’s family.
Martin Blau was the grandpa of 3LAU’s father (the son of Edward Blau and Pauline Feiring). For Columbia Pictures International, Martin Blau served as vice president of advertising and public relations. Jewish Austrians Samuel Blau and Sarah Schreck immigrated to the US.
Although there have been speculations connecting 3LAU to the stunning American actress Emily Rudd, he hasn’t confirmed the truth of them.
It appears that 3LAU is operating alone as of 2022. Several hints, including his recent social media activity and interviews, have led to this conclusion.
3LAU stated in a recent interview that he is “not seeking for anything serious right now,” which along with his frequent depictions of hanging out with friends or traveling alone on social media suggests that he is now single.
Naturally, everything could change in the future. Young and successful musician 3LAU might run across competition in the future. But for now, it appears that he is satisfied to enjoy his freedom as a single man.
As a musician, 3LAU’s artistry is exemplified by his capacity to adroitly combine several electronic dance music genres to create a singular and moving auditory experience. His live performances are renowned for his inventive sampling techniques, which heighten the audience’s interest and participation. According to himself, 3LAU wants to use music to encourage listeners to forgo feelings of loneliness and form connections with one another.
At the youthful age of 20, 3LAU was initially exposed to the world of electronic dance music on a trip to Sweden in 2011. When he got back to school, he became frustrated with the status of mashup culture and decided to start his own. By the following June, he was posting his inventions on YouTube to wide-spread praise, proving that his diligent experimentation and devotion to his craft had paid off.
3LAU‘s rise to prominence in the electronic music scene was solidified in 2011 with the release of his beloved bootlegs Girls Who Save the World and All Night Long. His victory in a remix competition for his cover of Tiesto’s Work Hard, Play Hard further solidified his talent.
The eagerly awaited 3LAU Your Mind Tour marked the beginning of 3LAU’s DJ career in 2012 as a budding artist in electronic dance music. Dance Floor Filth, his self-titled first album, solidified his position as a rising star in the American electronic music scene and paved the way for the release of Dance Floor Filth 2 later that year.
Late in 2013, 3LAU teamed up with fellow DJ Carnage for the Night Riot Tour, which received enthusiastic reception from audiences and praise from critics. Jonah Ollman of Sound of Boston lauded 3LAU‘s live performances, noting their “mesmerizing blend of mashups, electro-house, and melodic voice samples [that] kept the youthful 20-something crowd enthralled and entertained.”
In the summer of 2015, 3LAU made its first trip across Europe, making stops in places like Berlin, Barcelona, and the legendary party island of Ibiza. Then he turned his attention to Asia, starting his maiden tour of the continent and electrifying crowds in places like Bangkok, Jakarta, and Tokyo.
In 2016, 3LAU launched Blume, a record label that created history by being the first dance music company to run only on charitable donations. All revenue generated by Blume‘s releases is donated to charitable organizations.
Through his work with Blume, 3LAU has raised considerable money for the non-profit organization Pencils of Promise. This funding has been instrumental in the construction of a seven-classroom school in Guatemala, as well as the implementation of various clean water, education, and teacher training programs.
3LAU has previously expressed his gratitude to Pencils of Promise for their assistance in building his first school, and in 2018, the organization was able to complete another school in Guatemala thanks to their partnership.
