On June 14, 1983, Tong Bing Yu, formerly known as Chris Ton, was born and raised in Malaysia. She was a student at the UCSI University Music Program where she studied music. She studied a variety of musical genres there, including jazz, Western classical music, and traditional Chinese music.
She also took part in a number of musical organizations, such as the UCSI University Chinese Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra.
Her mother’s maiden name was Liu Ton, and her father, Zhen Ton, was a Confucian scholar.
Tong Binglin, Tong Bingjie, and Tong Bingxin were at least three of Tong Bing Yu’s brothers.

Tong Bing Yu won the Miss Malaysia Chinese Cosmos International title in 2006 and two subsidiary titles, Miss Personality and Miss Perfect Skin. Go Go Travel, a China-Malaysia Jiangsu TV travelogue, was her first TV hosting gig. The show featured attractions and cuisine from both China and Malaysia. Her co-hosts at the time were Taiwanese host Chen Hong, Allan Kew, and Huang Jing.
